Launch of Project RESPECT

Respect image for web

Following our recent commitment to a series of initiatives which will lead to our business becoming much more acceptable and sustainable from an environmental perspective, we are taking a coordinated and balanced approach to reducing our carbon footprint and launching our environmental programme Project RESPECT (or Reducing Emissions with Sustainable Policies and an Environmental Conscience Together) on 1st December 2010.

Our Mission Statement is:

"To be not only the UK & Ireland’s leading Chemical Distribution business, but to undertake our activities in as safe and sustainable a manner as possible; demonstrating regard and respect for our staff, customers, suppliers and the environment."

Since becoming members of The Prince’s Mayday Network, we have been measuring and recording our Company Carbon and Depot Energy Footprints.  The first of these reports will outline energy consumption Q1-Q3 2010 and full comparisons start with Q1 2011 versus Q1 2010. The units will be tonnes of CO2 and tonnes of CO2 (emissions) per 1000 tonnes delivered, so that improvements can be measured relative to volume growth.

This enables us to benchmark our progress in reducing our impact on the environment, manage these emissions further, and make a difference to our impact on the environment.

We already have a number of environmentally friendly initiatives in place.  Examples of these include: time controlled lighting, sustainability through returnable packaging, Safe And Fuel Efficient Driver  (S.A.F.E.D.) training for our drivers, the distribution and use of Air 1 (which limits the harmful effects of the diesel engine), and the building of the new depot at Swansea to the exacting environmental standards of BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

We have also had a number of suggestions for new initiatives.  Examples of these are:

  • Enhancements to heating Systems for energy efficiency
  • Recycling Stations
  • Insulation and lagging schemes
  • Rainwater harvesting

The business has made significant funding available for the programme and and every site is responsible for how this is best and most efficiently invested at a local level.

Every quarter we will continue to communicate our aims, objectives and initiatives around the business through our internal campaigns and also through the Mayday Network Journey, and our website. We would like to thank all our employees for their commitment to ensure that we become a greener business.
