Transport of Dangerous Goods Legislation 2009
ADR 2009 has brought with it some major changes:
Instruction in writing

The main change in ADR is the new four page instructions in writing that has replaced the one page tremcard.

The new style instructions in writing are more generic than the previous one page document.

The instructions in writing only need to be provided in a language that the vehicle crew can understand. One set of Instructions in Writing need to be readily available in the vehicle cab.

The instructions in writing need to correspond to the section 5.4.3 in ADR 2009.

It is the carriers’ responsibility to provide the Instructions in Writing.

Tunnel Restrictions

Tunnel restriction codes have been added to the dangerous goods list.

Some chemicals may be restricted or prohibited through tunnels.

A full list of the tunnel codes will shortly be available on the Department for Transport website: http://www.dft.gov.uk/
Vehicle Equipment

The list of equipment that needs to be carried on board vehicles carrying dangerous goods has been amended.

The equipment that needs to be carried on board the vehicle is dependant on the classification of the product being carried.

The additional equipment requirements may include a shovel, a drain seal, a collection container made of plastic and an eye rinsing liquid.
Date of implementation in the UK

The Transport of Dangerous Goods regulations 2009 came into force in Europe on 1st January 2009 however the regulations came into force in the UK on 1st July 2009.
